Most Wayanad itineraries rush through the south of the district — Edakkal Caves, Soochipara, Chembra — and skip the north. That is a mistake. The area around Mananthavady has forests, river islands, ancient temples and some of Wayanad’s most important history. As a travel agency based in Mananthavady, here are the places we recommend to visitors.
Thirunelli Temple
An ancient Maha Vishnu temple in the Brahmagiri hills, surrounded by forest. Pilgrims come from across Kerala and Karnataka, especially to perform rituals for ancestors at the Papanasini stream near the temple. Even if you are not a pilgrim, the drive through the forest and the setting of the temple are worth the trip. Dress modestly and follow temple rules on clothing.
Kuruva Island (Kuruvadweep)
A cluster of small islands on the Kabini river, with forest paths, streams and bamboo groves. You reach the islands by bamboo raft or boat. Entry is controlled by the forest department, the number of visitors per day is limited, and the islands close during heavy monsoon. Go early in the day, and check whether it is open before you plan your trip around it.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, on the road towards Kutta and Karnataka. Forest department jeep safaris run in the morning and afternoon, and you may see elephants, deer, gaur and birds — sightings are never guaranteed. Safari timings and closures are set by the forest department.
Pazhassi Raja Tomb
Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, who fought the British in the Wayanad forests, was cremated in Mananthavady. The tomb and the small museum nearby are a short stop in town and a good introduction to Wayanad’s history.
Valliyoorkavu Bhagavathi Temple
One of the most important temples in Wayanad, just outside Mananthavady town. Its annual festival draws large crowds, including many from Wayanad’s tribal communities.
Banasura Sagar Dam
A drive away from Mananthavady at Padinjarathara — one of the largest earth dams in India, with views of small islands and the Banasura hills. Boating runs when open. Combine it with nearby Karlad Lake.
Begur and Kattikkulam forest roads
The forest drive between Mananthavady and Tholpetty passes through Begur. Drive slowly, never stop or get out of the car near wild animals, and never feed them.
A one-day plan around Mananthavady
- Early morning: Thirunelli Temple and a walk to Papanasini.
- Mid-morning: Tholpetty safari (if timings allow) or the Begur forest drive.
- Lunch: Kerala meals in Mananthavady town.
- Afternoon: Kuruva Island (check entry timings first) or the Pazhassi Tomb and museum.
- Evening: Valliyoorkavu Temple, then back to your stay.
Tips before you go
- Check what is open. Kuruva Island, safaris and treks can close due to rain, elephant movement or forest department orders.
- Carry ID. Some forest entry points ask for it.
- Avoid night driving in forest areas. Animals cross the roads after dark.
- Best season: October to May is the most comfortable for sightseeing. The monsoon makes everything green, but some places close.
