Wayanad has no airport of its own, so every flight starts with a drive down the ghats. The three airports people from Wayanad use are Kannur, Kozhikode (Calicut) and Kochi. The right one depends on where in Wayanad you live, where you are flying and the fare on your dates. Here is how we help our customers choose.
Kannur International Airport (Mattannur)
Route from Wayanad: From Mananthavady, the usual route is via Boys Town and the Palchuram ghat to Kottiyoor and Peravoor, then on to Mattannur.
Good for: Travellers from north Wayanad — Mananthavady, Thalappuzha, Kattikkulam, Thirunelli, Vellamunda. Direct Gulf flights operate from Kannur, and it is usually less crowded than larger airports.
Keep in mind: Fewer flights than Kozhikode or Kochi, so on some dates fares can be higher or timings less convenient.
Calicut International Airport (Karipur, Kozhikode)
Route from Wayanad: Via Kalpetta, Lakkidi and the Thamarassery ghat road, then on to Kozhikode and Karipur.
Good for: Travellers from south and central Wayanad — Kalpetta, Meppadi, Vythiri, Sulthan Bathery. Kozhikode has many flights to the Gulf, which helps when you need a specific date.
Keep in mind: The Thamarassery ghat can be slow with traffic, roadworks or landslides in the monsoon. Leave extra time.
Cochin International Airport (Kochi)
Good for: International routes not available from Kannur or Kozhikode — for example some Southeast Asian, European or long-haul connections — and when Kochi fares are much cheaper.
Keep in mind: It is the farthest of the three from Wayanad. Add travel cost and time (and sometimes a hotel night) when comparing fares.
Also worth checking: Bengaluru and Mangaluru
For some destinations, flying out of Bengaluru (via Mysuru) can be cheaper or offer direct routes. Remember that the forest roads to Karnataka have night travel restrictions — for example through Bandipur on the Sulthan Bathery–Mysuru road — so plan the drive around them.
How to choose: a simple rule
- Check where you live in Wayanad. North Wayanad usually leans towards Kannur; south Wayanad towards Kozhikode.
- Compare the total cost, not just the air fare — add taxi, parking and time.
- Check flight timings. An early morning flight may mean leaving Wayanad at midnight.
- In the monsoon, add buffer time for ghat roads.
Tips for Gulf travellers
- Check baggage allowance — it varies by airline and fare type.
- Reach the airport at least 3 hours before an international flight.
- Carry printed copies of your visa and return ticket.
