Every year, many families from Wayanad travel for Umrah. The rules have changed a lot in the last few years — new visa types, the Nusuk app, vaccine checks at the airport. This guide explains how an Umrah trip from Wayanad works today, step by step.
Saudi rules for Umrah are updated often. Treat this guide as a starting point and confirm the latest requirements with us before you book.
Step 1: Check your passport
Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your travel date and have blank pages. If it is close to expiry, renew it first — our guide to the 6-month passport validity rule explains why, and we help with passport services in Wayanad.
Step 2: Choose your visa
Indian pilgrims can perform Umrah on an Umrah visa issued with a registered Umrah package. Some other Saudi visas also allow Umrah, depending on their conditions — for example, a family visit visa if you have relatives living in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has also introduced a one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa. Which visa is right depends on your plans and who you are travelling with. See our Umrah visa from India page.
Step 3: Get the meningitis vaccine
Saudi Arabia requires Umrah pilgrims to be vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis (the ACYW vaccine), given at least 10 days before arrival, with a valid certificate. Airlines may check the certificate before boarding. Influenza vaccination is also recommended. Plan this early — don’t leave it for the week you travel.
Step 4: Book flights, hotels and transport together
Hotels and transport for an Umrah package are booked through licensed providers and linked to the Saudi system. Booking everything together also means your flight dates, hotel nights in Makkah and Madinah, and transfers match. Flights to Jeddah or Madinah usually leave from Kozhikode (Calicut), Kannur or Kochi — we compare options for your dates.
Step 5: Nusuk app and permits
The Nusuk app is used for Umrah permits and for appointments such as prayer in the Rawdah at Masjid an-Nabawi. We help you register and understand the permits you need before you fly.
Step 6: Choose the right time
- Ramadan: the most rewarding time for many, but also the busiest and most expensive. Book months ahead.
- School holidays: popular with families, so prices rise.
- Hajj period: Umrah is restricted around Hajj every year. Check the season dates before you plan.
What to pack
- Ihram clothing (for men) and modest clothing for women
- Comfortable sandals and walking shoes
- Copies of passport, visa, vaccine certificate and hotel bookings
- Your regular medicines with prescriptions
- A small bag for the Haram, an umbrella or cap for the sun
- A phone power bank and a Saudi SIM or eSIM
Travelling with elders
Many Wayanad families take parents on Umrah. Tell us in advance about mobility needs — we can request wheelchair assistance at airports and suggest hotels closer to the Haram, which mean less walking.
Why plan Umrah with a local agency
